Introduction from Manuela Veloso, Head, Machine Learning Department and Andrew Moore, Dean, School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.

Some questions and answers from the event

Q (Anthony, panel moderator): What are the ethical/moral issues related to personalized education? Is it really "equal opportunity" when we decide that some students can learn faster and help them achieve their goals faster?

A: I think it is unethical to *not* personalize education.

~ Ken Koedinger, Professor of HCI and Psychology at CMU, founder of Carnegie Learning, Inc.

Q (from the audience): What is the fundamental cost of education? Is it textbooks?

A: “Teaching is 50x or more efficient than textbooks. Fundamentally, we don’t really understand which experiences make people learn (or optimize neural connections that make a person learn, if you will). The real cost of education is the expertise and technology of making the learning process happen.”

~ Ken Koedinger, Professor of HCI and Psychology at CMU, founder of Carnegie Learning, Inc.

CMU AI+ Mission

Some quotes from the event:

“19 billion dollars of VC capital were invested in Ed-Tech in 2017.”

~ Angela Kennedy, President and CEO of Carnegie Speech.

“Here is a cool idea for an Ed startup: Focus on finding people who need about 4 months of additional training to get a better job but can’t afford taking that much time off. Then invest in them, let them take that time to study/train, and ask for a share of their future revenue.”

~ Sergey Karaev, Co-founder and CTO of Gradescope.

“70% of our expertise is outside of our conscious awareness.”

~ Ken Koedinger, Professor of HCI and Psychology at CMU, founder of Carnegie Learning, Inc.

“You cannot ask more than $10 per student in enterprise sales to educational institutions.”

~ Sergey Karaev, Co-founder and CTO of Gradescope.

“If you can improve a person’s command of English, their yearly income or earning potential can go up to $25k per year.”

~ Angela Kennedy, President and CEO of Carnegie Speech.
