Ameet Talwalkar Wins 2018 Okawa Foundation Research Grant
Ameet Talwalkar, Assistant Professor at the Machine Learning Department with Carnegie Mellon University has won the 2018 Okawa Foundation Research Grant. The Research Grant Presentation Ceremony is scheduled to be held on September in San Francisco.
The mission of the Okawa Foundation is promotion and development in the field of Information and Communications Technology through awards and research grants as well as efforts to nurture researchers, engineers, and providers. It also seeks to promote diversity and ubiquitousness of human communication and thereby contribute to the peace and prosperity of humankind.

Ameet Talwalkar is an assistant professor in the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University, as well as a Co-founder and Chief Scientist at Determined AI. His primary interests are in the field of statistical machine learning, including problems at the intersection of systems and learning, and applications in computational genomics. His current work is motivated by the goal of democratizing machine learning, with a focus on topics related to the scalability, automation, and interpretability of learning algorithms and systems. He led the initial development of the MLlib project in Apache Spark, is a co-author of the graduate-level textbook 'Foundations of Machine Learning' (2012, MIT Press), and created an award-winning edX MOOC about distributed machine learning.
